IPEMA, the International Playground Equipment Manufacturers Association, provides 3rd party Product Certification services for U.S. and Canadian public play equipment and public play surfacing materials in the U.S.
IPEMA Executive Director, Denise Calabrese, states, “IPEMA is dedicated to promoting safety in playground equipment and surfacing. We believe we can best do so by promoting our third-party certification program to the industry, and encouraging companies to apply for certification of their products.”
IPEMA successfully continues to contribute to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) guidelines on public play equipment and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Other IPEMA accomplishments include encouraging the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) to create the original F1487 Standard Consumer Safety Performance Specifications for Playground Equipment for Public Use.
IPEMA continues to maintain an active role with the ASTM, contributing specific standards for playground surfacing, accessibility of playground surfacing and soft-contained play equipment to name a few.
IPEMA’s membership is open to any individual or entity that is involved in selling or utilizing play equipment and related products within the scope of their operation or employment, but not engaged in the manufacturing of play equipment and related products. Associate members will have the opportunity to be involved in IPEMA’s mission to promote the value of play, network with industry leaders, keep abreast of industry news, be alerted when new legislation is introduced and much more.
Robertson Industries Certification:
With thousands of children playing on our surfaces every day, we make sure that safety is our number one priority.
Robertson Industries surfaces have been tested for their shock absorbing properties in accordance with procedures outlined in ASTM F-1292-95, standard specifications for impact attenuation of surface systems under and around playground equipment. This ensures that our shock absorbing pads will help minimize injuries if a fall were to occur.
In striving to meet the highest safety standards possible, our company is an IPEMA member and our surfaces are IPEMA certified. We also play an active role in IPEMA with Richard Hawley, Corporate Vice President / General Manager of Robertson Industries, serving as the Surfacing Certification Representative
Whether you’re an architect, playground contractor or school/park official, when it comes to playgrounds there is one thing that is paramount – SAFETY.
TotTurf is more than a quality playground surface, it is a safety surface as well.
- According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), over 200,000 children a year go to U.S. emergency rooms with injuries related to playground equipment.
- 79% of the injuries occur when a child falls from the equipment to the ground
- 34% of injuries occur to children between the ages of 5-14
- In preschool age children, 49% of the injuries were to the head/face
- Overall, harm to hands and arms accounted for 43% of accidents
- Falls cannot always be prevented, but having a protective surface can help minimize injury if a fall was to occur. According to CPSC, over 90% of injuries occurred on public play equipment that had surfaces such as dirt and grass compared to only 9% who has surfaces like poured in place.
- Since most fatal accidents involved head related injuries, the CPSC concluded that “protective surfacing under and around all playground equipment can reduce the risk of serious head injury.”
Robertson Industries Safety Facts:
Safety is our number one priority when we install our surfaces. This is why we’ve created the Fall Height Chart, which demonstrates the depth of buffings and wear-course needed to provide optimum protection. For example, an area with a 12 foot fall height would require a 5 inch system (4.5 inches of buffings and a .5 inch either wear-course).
Robertson Industries is compliant with the accessibility and safety guidelines established by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and meets or exceeds all accessibility and safety guidelines established by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
Robertson Industries products are certified by the International Play Equipment Manufacturers Association (IPEMA), a non-profit organization providing a third party public play equipment and surfacing inspection. Our surfaces have been tested for shock absorbing properties in accordance with procedures outlined in ASTM F-1292-99, standard specifications for impact attenuation of surface systems under and around playground equipment. This ensures that our surfaces are safe and help minimize an injury if a fall was to occur.
